Health Beds

Our proud heritage.

The Smeaton family have been making handmade beds for over 125 years.
The tradition of bed making was first started by Henry Smeaton, who made palliasse mattresses filled with straw, under the archers of a bridge in Masboro, Rotherham.
This tradition of bed making was passed down to his son, Arthur and his grandsons, Henry Smeaton known as Harry, the youngest of three brothers. Harry formed a business, Smeaton Brothers, using his carpentry skills and the family tradition of bed making, in a workshop above an undertakers in Wellgate, Rotherham.
As a sixth generation family business, we value those time honoured skills passed down through the generations, ensuring Healthbeds are traditionally hand made. Using only the finest materials, each bed is individually handmade, quality tested and assured at every stage of production in our purpose built state of the art factory at Thurcroft, Rotherham.
In recent years the company has enjoyed Royal Patronage supplying bespoke Natural Pocket Spring mattresses and bases to TRH`s Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
Our newly launched Exclusive AIS Gel Comfort and Gel Support Ranges offer perfect comfort and support ranging from 1000 to 3700 Pocket springs and also our luxury Smeaton Blenheim Pocket incorporating revolutionary new “Chemical Free” Embrace damask fabrics added to our “Zero to landfill” mattress end of life goal and Carbon footprint management through our own Ancient Woodlands.
